Journey to the lost lake
TunisiaWe at NPL-Overland.eu are delighted to be able to offer you this spectacular desert experience in a small group. On this off-road trip we will take you to the south-eastern foothills of the Grand Erg Oriental, the Tunisian Sahara.

Pure desert!
After our ferry crossing from Genoa to La Goulette / Tunis, we spend a night at a campsite by the sea in Hammamet before heading directly to the south of the country to Sabria via the highway. Here we spend the night in a small oasis, get to know our Tunisian guides and enjoy typical Tunisian hospitality.
Before we really immerse ourselves in the endless dune landscapes of the Tunisian Sahara, we spend a night in a tented camp on the edge of the desert, where we have the whole afternoon to try out our vehicles in the dunes to get a feel for driving in the sand.
Our journey takes us to the famous sand roses near Djebil, over Table Mountain Tembaine from where we have a fantastic view of the endless expanse of the Sahara foothills, to Dakanis where we set up camp for the night in the dunes.
Over the next few days, our route is determined by the course of the dunes. Only a rough direction is given to us…further and further south we are drawn to Lac Hwidhat-Erriched.
On the way, with a bit of luck, we meet Algerian desert nomads with their camels and learn something about their way of life, so unknown to us, in this endless sea of sand and rubble.
After another night around the campfire in absolute silence under a breathtaking starry sky, we come full circle and slowly drive back towards civilization, past Tembaine, the mountain we know from the start of our journey, towards Bir Boubaker and Bir Abdallah.
Before heading back to Hammamet on the eleventh day of our tour, we spend one last farewell evening together at the oasis camp in Sabria and talk about our experiences over the last few days until late at night.
On the way back to Hammamet, we stop for a while in Douz, the gateway to the Sahara, to have a cup of tea, watch the hustle and bustle or buy a souvenir or two. Here everyone can put their bargaining skills to the test again.……
Due to its nature, this trip places different demands on the vehicle and equipment than our other trips. Precisely because we will be self-sufficient in the desert for eight days, much more precise travel preparation is required here. For this reason, extensive initial telephone contact with us is absolutely essential for this tour in order to discuss all requirements in advance. Of course, you will receive detailed checklists from us after booking, which are included in the travel documents and should make your travel preparations easier.
We expressly point out that the trip offered here is pure desert. We largely dispense with sightseeing in any form. Adventure dunes, driving in the sand, silence and breathtaking starry skies are definitely in the foreground here.
We look forward to welcoming you on this sand-tastic tour. Dive into the Sahra adventure with us…

What our customers say about the tour:
Woowwwwwww
Dear Nils. Thank you for the wonderful moments in the desert. This was my fourth time in the Sahara with NPL. And it won’t be the last time. Like every time, it was an indescribable experience. The beautiful dunes and driving in the sand are simply something special. A big thank you to Nils and Walid for the super organization and the great food. A tip from me! If anyone is unsure whether this tour is for them: just book and enjoy👍 See you again Nils. Greetings from Switzerland Sandro

Breathtaking — Challenging — Ingenious
Adventure in a friendly atmosphere
Dear people, imagine someone riding as a passenger on the journey to the lost lake, then buying an off-roader so that he and his wife can be there as drivers at the next opportunity. Either this person is stupid or the trip is great from A to Z. Both are true 😊
An indescribable experience
Arrived home safely, but heart and soul are still in the desert. An indescribable experience and great adventure … and very well organized.
Fantastic!
Dear Nils, we very much hope that you have made it home safely and that you are doing well. We still can’t quite believe that this wonderful trip has really come to an end. We enjoyed it to the full! It was one of the most beautiful Tunisia and desert trips we have been on. The tour guides you chose are very special people! We would have been surprised if anything else had happened, as all our trips with you were wonderful. Best regards Renate and Helmuth
You have to experience it!
I was allowed to take part in this tour as a passenger with my nephew — and I have not regretted it! It is a unique experience to get to know the desert this way. Big praise for the entire organization to Nils. It was really amazing what the Tunisian guides served for dinner in the evening. There was nothing to complain about! Simply perfect and you always felt safe and in good hands with the group. It’s an experience you’ll remember for a long time! Thank you for that!
Simply awesome
Dear offroad friends. It was already the third time that I was in the Sahara with NPL-Overland and Nils. And YES.…it certainly won’t be the last time. There is something magical about the desert that is hard to put into words. My tip: Simply book NPL and experience the breathtaking beauty of the Tunisian desert with your own eyes (by car). I watched the sunrise every morning and let my mind wander. One of the highlights was the freshly baked bort that the Tunisian guides lovingly and proudly prepared in the sand oven every morning. A big compliment for that. The delicious dinner was also freshly prepared over the fire every evening. Afterwards, we all sat together around the campfire and looked up at the endless starry sky. Dear Nils, many thanks for the great organization and the wonderful time with you and the Tunisian guides. It was a great group. I will remember and dream about this trip for a long time to come. See you soon.…Sandro
Evening hayride with very nice people
I was a passenger in the Landy with Günter and had no desert experience. My impressions of the preparation, organization, planning, procedure, execution, friendliness and team spirit far exceeded my expectations. Furthermore, I can only fully agree with Werner’s experience report. But I would like to add one more thing. Verena and her son Lucas put up a brave fight. Not every family does that. It was a great time with you all. THANK YOU FOR THAT
Here you are a guest not a customer!
At this point we would like to take the opportunity to write a report about our trip with NPL. Short version — for all those who don’t want to read so much — we would go on a trip with Nils again at any time. Honest, open and professional from A to Z. For all those who want to know more… Before booking: Very professional, individual, comprehensive advice on all trips. The most important thing here is honesty in relation to expectations. We don’t sell what costs a lot, but what you want to do! Preparation for the trip: Even after booking, always available and professional in terms of the necessary preparations for the trip. Even when faced with the challenge that your own insurance company simply does not want to insure the country. Travel arrangements: Meeting point at the ferry, getting to know each other… then the crossing to Tunisia and through customs. Everything went without a hitch. Of course, it’s an exciting experience with such packed vehicles. Once we arrived in the country, after a great night in the hotel with a hearty breakfast, we went to the gas station to set off in the direction of the desert camp. As we were able to experience the tour with our 4‑year-old son, we would like to take this opportunity to say a special thank you to the whole group for understanding the one or other break and the time he was allowed to do something with you! Here is a clear note about traveling with children. This is not a recreational tour with sightseeing. Your kids need to have some travel experience and be saddle fit. This shouldn’t be the first adventure you go on. For us, it was a complete success with happy children and parents. Sahara: Reaching the camp on the evening of arrival is already the first challenge. Next time we’ll take the air out of the tires… :-) The first evening in the desert is spent getting to know the very nice Tunisian guides, eating delicious food and going to bed early. The next few days begin with wonderful sunrises and end with some long days of driving… But always with lots of new impressions and great experiences. We had a lot of fun in the tour group. Even the return journey together to customs and by ferry to Italy maintained the positive mood. All in all, we had a very nice time. Now I would like to give you some very special details, which can be different for everyone: — Some very long driving days, we were aware of that, but it must be clear. — Food: we had enough food for 10 days… But the food was so good that my wife and child hardly needed anything extra — Water: We needed about 80 liters. We could also have used the drinking water from our support vehicle… Then 60 liters would have been enough for us — Fuel: We used up almost all of the 160 liters. As a petrolhead, you should definitely take that into account. Now it only remains for me to say thank you once again. Thank you Nils, Artur and Walid for organizing and accompanying us. Thanks to the participants for the time together and not forgetting a thank you to our Tunisian accompanying team. We look forward to the next trip.
Great troupe
The tour to the lost lake was exactly how I imagine a trip into the vastness of the desert to be. The team around Nils is first class and provides sound support in every situation. The vastness and tranquillity of the desert did me a world of good. In the evening we had a really outstanding dinner with 4 courses by candlelight! Over an after-work beer around the campfire, we talked about the day’s experiences until we all fell blissfully into our tents. This is exactly how a vacation in the desert should be. If I have anything to complain about the tour, it’s that I’ve put on 2 kilos. Thanks Nils, Artur and Vualid, I’ll be back!
Ingenious would be an understatement
This tour was perfect from start to finish, from top to bottom! Nils and his team did an excellent job of guiding us into the desert and bringing us home safely. Following the topographical guidelines, it was easy at the beginning to get to grips with the conditions and the performance of our own off-roader. During the 8 days in which we only had desert around us, driving was the absolute priority. Nevertheless, there were impressive dune landscapes, Table Mountain, a lost lake, Berber cave houses and even spontaneous excursions to Carthage or Hammamet. In addition to the excellent support and evening entertainment, the local guides also showed us what they are capable of with a rear-wheel drive pickup in the deepest desert and the highest dunes. Pure experience and concentrated knowledge was gathered here and gave us a good, secure feeling at all times. Nils, thank you for this great experience. I would love to come back and look forward to seeing all the participants again here and there on the various NPL OERLAND tours. See you soon!
6x👍 HAMMER
This tour was simply amazing from A to Z — amazing team, amazing Tunisian crew, amazing organization and tour guide by Nils, amazing routes, amazing dunes — we would love to do it again.
A great tour …
A great tour where everything went really well and the description of the tour on the npl website was clearly exceeded for me. After our arrival, we spent 8 days away from civilization between dunes and gravel roads. The support and company provided by our guides was exemplary, with “half board” in the desert, as breakfast and dinner were already included in the tour package. We ate every evening in a communal tent set up especially for the tour participants. In the mornings and evenings, the guides served freshly baked flatbread in Bedouin style and at night there was a starry sky to dream under. I had everything I could wish for on an off-road tour through the desert and, of course, our vehicles sometimes got stuck, but this was handled professionally by all the participants, every single one of whom I would like to see on my next off-road tour. Thank you Nils for this wonderful experience, it was my first tour with you, but almost certainly not my last, including a repeat of the Tunisia tour.
It was brilliant
Once again it was a great tour with many impressive experiences. This was my second time in Tunisia with Nils and NPL-Overland and it certainly won’t be the last. Everything was just right. From the Tunisian guides who always prepared a great meal and the mechanic who always kept everything running smoothly. The tent that was set up every evening was also great. We could stay in it protected from the weather and enjoy dinner together, which was cooked on the fire. For me, every morning was an experience, fresh bread cooked in the embers…mhhhh that was delicious. I should also mention the great hotel in Sfax, which is certainly one of the best. Dear Nils, thank you again for the great trip. We will definitely see you again. Best regards from Switzerland…Sandro
Fantastic

We had a great time on the tour in an incredibly impressive desert — memories for life! Nils, thank you so much again!
